Graduate Degree Requirements

Students should consult the Graduate School Catalog for both the university and departmental requirements to earn their degree.

CEAE Requirements for the Master's Degrees

Candidates for the Master of Science degrees (MS ARCE, MS CE, MS EnvE, MS EnvS, and MS WRS) have two options available. Option A requires 30 hours of credit including a thesis of six hours (six to 10 hours for the environmental degrees) and a final oral examination including defense of the thesis. Option B requires 30 hours of credit including a 3- or 4-hour special problem investigation in the area of specialization and a final examination. It does not require a thesis.

The M.S. degree in civil engineering (MS CE) requires a minimum of nine hours of graduate-level courses in one of the following areas: (1) construction, (2) engineering mechanics, (3) environmental engineering, (4) geotechnical engineering, (5) structural engineering, (6) transportation engineering, or (7) water resources engineering. In addition, a minimum of 6 total hours of graduate-level work is required in any one or more of the remaining six departmental areas.

The M.S. degrees in environmental engineering (MS EnvE) and environmental science (MS EnvS) require an understanding of chemical, biological, and physical principles of environmental engineering processes, i.e., satisfactory completion of CE 770, CE 772, CE 773, and CE 774 or equivalent. Substitutions require the approval of both the student's committee and the graduate adviser.

The water resources science degree (MS WRS) requires a 15-hour core consisting of three hours of graduate-level work in each of five of the following six areas: water quality, surface-water hydrology, groundwater, water resources, fluid mechanics, and meteorology.

The Master of Civil Engineering degree (M CE) requires 34 semester hours of graduate courses, of which a minimum of seven hours must be in engineering management core courses. The core courses are EMGT 806, EMGT 809, EMGT 810, EMGT 811, EMGT 813, EMGT 821, EMGT 823, and EMGT 830. EMGT 809 is required and only one of either EMGT 813 or EMGT 823 is accepted. The remaining 27 hours of credit in the technical courses is are subject to the same criteria as the Master of Science degree in civil engineering, with the additional restriction that no more than 10 hours of engineering management courses may be applied toward the degree. A written 4-hour final examination is required in the student's area of concentration. This examination is waived if the student has passed the Professional Engineer examination.

The Master of Construction Management degree (MCM) requires 33 credit hours, consisting of eighteen hours of core courses, 12 hours of electives, and three hours of master's project. The core courses are CMGT 750, CMGT 751, CMGT 752, CMGT 753, CMGT 754 and CMGT 755.

Courses to be applied toward any of the master's degrees must be listed on a Plan of Study form approved by the student's major professor and examining committee and the departmental graduate studies committee. Not more than nine hours of courses from other departments nor more than six hours of courses numbered below 700 (of which only three hours may be within the department) may be applied toward any of the master's degrees without approval of the departmental graduate studies committee. Also, no more than four hours of special problem credit may be applied toward any of the master's degrees without approval of the departmental graduate studies committee.

CEAE Requirements for the Ph.D. Degrees

Doctoral graduate students must satisfy the all of the Graduate School's requirements for the Ph.D. degree. These requirements are stated in the "Doctoral Degree Requirements" section of the Graduate School Catalog. The student also must complete additional requirements of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering.

  1. The student must pass a qualifying exam to the satisfaction of a faculty advisory committee. This committee shall consist of the proposed dissertation advisor and at least two other members of the graduate faculty. At least two of the committee members must be CEAE faculty members. A student with a master's degree must take the qualifying exam after completion of 12 credit hours toward the doctoral degree. Students admitted to the doctoral degree program directly from the bachelor's degree must take the qualifying exam after completion of 30 credit hours toward the doctoral degree. The final examination for a master's degree granted by the KU CEAE Department may also serve as the qualifying exam for the doctoral degree. In this case, the examining committee would make two separate pass/fail decisions: one for the master's exam and another for the doctoral qualifying exam.
  2. The student must submit a completed Plan of Study form before the end the first semester of study. The Plan of Study must be approved by the advisory committee identified in Item 2 above and must list the following:
    1. The course work to be completed. A minimum of 24 hours of course work beyond the master's degree is required. Students who do not earn a master's degree prior to the doctoral degree must complete 48 hours of course work beyond the bachelor's degree.
    2. One proposed foreign language or research skill. Any course work taken to satisfy the foreign language or research skill requirement shall be in addition to the course work required in item 2(a).
    3. The student's dissertation topic, or the general area proposed for the dissertation.
